Moisture Ants are often times confused with other ants like pavement and odorous ants. While they are small, they can still cause serious structure damage if untreated. Like carpenter ants – moisture ants are a nuisance insect. While they share some qualities, they also differ from carpenter ants. Unlike carpenter ants, moisture ants actually digest cellulose (they eat the wood). While they digest wood – they typically feed on wood that contains moisture. This is where they also get their name – Moisture Ants. This can become a significant issue very quickly if it goes unnoticed. Moisture Ants digest cellulose in order to build a home for their colony – overtime they eat through serious structures causing mass amounts of damage.
Odorous Ants are one of the most common household ants. Where do they get their name? When crushed, odorous ants release a rotten smell that is very unpleasant – think of a stinkbug. Odorous ants love to nest both inside and outside. Like moisture ants, odorous ants tend to migrate toward moisture held structures or areas. Typically, you can find them in moisture locked wood, rotten wood, under stones, and in similar wet areas. Inside, you can find them most commonly in the pantry. They tend to feed on meats and sugars. Therefore, make sure to properly seal all of your food to prevent a possible infestation.
